A Skywest Airlines Brasilia begins its taxi-out for a sunset flight at Los Angeles Airport LAX. First introduced in May 1985 by aircraft manufacturer Embraer, the Brasilia revolutionized regional air travel. For the first time in aviation history, small communities and the regional airlines had an aircraft designed to meet their needs.
Powered by two 1,800 SHP Pratt & Whitney PW118A turboprop engines, the Brasilia offered a greater cruise speed (315 kts), combined with major passenger comfort improvements that were unseen in regional aircraft at that time. Embraer also implemented a passive control system to reduce noise and vibration. At one time operated by 30 companies in at least 14 countries, this 30-seat turboprop has logged more than 5 million flight hours and has carried more than 60 million passengers. Skywest Airlines is now the largest operator of the Brasilia, feeding passengers to major hubs primarily on the west cost of the United States. Now in its waning years of service, the aircraft is witnessing the "passing of the baton" to the Regional Jet.
Artist Gary Pidgeon wanted to honor this great airplane and has produced a beautiful acrylic painting showing the Brasilia at work, safely transporting passengers out of iconic Los Angeles International Airport.
