At the Laguna Seca U.S.G.P. races during the 1994 500cc motorcycle Grand Prix season, American World Champion Kevin Schwantz was injured in a crash during practice on the Lucky Strike Suzuki RGV500 and didn't make the race. A short time later Schwantz retired from GP motorcycle racing. With the absence of Schwantz, Australian Mick Doohan won the 1994 World Championship on the Honda NSR500. Doohan went on to win five straight World Championships.
