"Andretti & Nilsson"
From the Owen Art Studios' exclusive classic-vintage photo collection, this historic black and white picture of auto racing from the 1970's has been beautifully restored and enhanced.

Italian-American Mario Andretti and Lotus teammate Gunnar Nilsson of Sweden drive the Lotus 77 at the rain-swept Japanese Grand Prix in 1976. Andretti won despite the harsh conditions, with Nilsson finishing 6th. Nilsson went on to win the Belgian Grand Prix in 1977, one year before his death. (more below)

More -- Andretti was on the podium with Patrick Depailler (2nd) and James Hunt, who won the 1976 championship by finishing 3rd at this season-ending race at the Mount Fuji circuit. Andretti's ability at developing a racing car helped Lotus' return to the front of the Formula 1 grid, resulting in lapping the field despite the poor handling characteristics of the 77. He won the World Championship in 1978 driving the Lotus 79.

Both Andretti and Nilsson reported the steering and ride of the ill-handling Lotus 77 were occasionally vague and unresponsive. Andretti did not care for the car, proclaiming it to be a "dog." This motivated Lotus' Colin Chapman to accelerate research and finish the stunning Lotus 78.
