More -- Clark and Graham Hill were fastest in qualifying in the new Lotus and they shared the front row with Championship leader Denny Hulme (Brabham-Repco). Chris Amon's Ferrari and Dan Gurney's Eagle were on the second row, while the third row featured Bruce McLaren (McLaren-BRM M5A), Jack Brabham (Brabham-Repco) and Jochen Rindt in the fastest of the Cooper-Maseratis. The BRMs of Jackie Stewart and Mike Spence were on the fourth row.
It was raining when the car race began and Clark took the lead. On the fourth lap, Hulme passed Clark and Brabham moved ahead of Hill to take third. McLaren's car was working well and he was up to fifth when he spun out, but fought back and by lap 13 was able to take third place from Brabham. On lap 22 he overtook Clark for second place. The track was now beginning to dry and McLaren's car was less suited to the conditions and Clark, then Brabham overtook. Hulme continued at the front, but Clark closed rapidly and took the lead on lap 58. It started to rain again, but Clark stayed in front until lap 68 when his engine cut out. Brabham then passed Hulme and the Brabhams ran 1-2 to the finish with Gurney in third place.
