"Fangio & Levegh"
and The Worst Tragedy in Racing History
From the Owen Art Studios' exclusive classic-vintage photo collection, this historic black and white picture of car racing from the 1950's has been beautifully restored and enhanced.

The year was 1955 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance auto race. Legendary Juan-Manuel Fangio (#19) is shown leading fellow Mercedes 300SLR driver, the late Pierre Levegh, just prior to the "worst tragedy in car racing history" -- the death of Levegh and over 80 innocent spectators. (more below)

Only 500 were produced for worldwide sale -- These Limited Edition Fine-Art "Archival" Giclee prints on heavy-weight paper are numbered and titled by Owen Art Studios. They are very easy-to-frame yourself -- no mat is needed and they fit into standard 24x18 inch or 20x16 inch ready-made frames.

More -- The chain of events leading up to the accident began in the third hour of this infamous race in 1955 Le Mans. Mike Hawthorn in the Jaguar D-type made a quick move to the pits using his superior disc brakes (the other drivers involved had slower drum brakes). Behind Hawthorn was Lance Macklin in the Austin-Healey 100 who made an evasive move. Levegh, who had just passed Fangio, was behind Macklin. Levegh did not have time to react. He hit Macklin sending himself and the Mercedes through the air into a mound of earth, set there to protect the spectators. The impact scattered deadly car components directly into the crowd. Levegh and over 80 spectators were killed. Fangio narrowly escaped injury. Macklin hit the pit wall, but survived. The race was continued to prevent the crowds from leaving in a panic, which would have blocked all access roads and the ambulances. Mercedes (even though they were ahead by one lap) withdrew from the race as a sign of respect to the victims (and later from motor racing in general for the next 30 years). Mike Hawthorn won the race that tragic day. Officially, the Jaguar team was not held responsible for the accident. Across the world, races were canceled, and there were bans on racing in several countries. In Switzerland today, the sport is still banned. This severe accident was a major contributor to changing attitudes about safety for spectators and drivers in motor racing.

Customer comments
"I received the matted and framed prints -- Senna at Magny-Cours, Fangio & Levegh, Ayrton Senna da Silva, Kimi & Michael, Schuey in the Rain, The Earnhardts, Jim Clark at Mosport, and Stormy Sebring -- and they look great, which is what I anticipated! I guess that I'm a traditionalist, because I do like the look of the matting. I haven't yet hung them as we are still getting our house arranged. I have some other pictures that I need to hang and two are large (3' x 4')--so I have to see where everything will fit. I hope that I will have room for everything! If you care, when I'm done I can take a couple of pictures and send them to you so that you can see how nice your prints look!" -- John Hassiepen, Springfield, IL
