From the Owen Art Studios' exclusive classic-vintage photo collection, this historic black and white picture of motorcycle racing from the 1980s has been beautifully restored and enhanced.
Eddie Lawson and Wes Cooley are shown in battle during the early days of AMA Superbike motorcycle racing.
Lawson on his famous #21 Kawasaki KZ1000 took the crown away from Cooley in 1981. Cooley on his #34 "Pops" Yoshimura Suzuki GS1000 had won the AMA Superbike Championship in 1979 and 1980 and had also won the prestigious Suzuka 8-Hour endurance race in Japan in 1978 with Mike Baldwin, and again in 1979 with Graeme Crosby. Cooley was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2004.
Lawson won the AMA Superbike Championship in 1981 and 1982. He also won the 250cc road racing National Championship in 1980 and 1981 for Kawasaki. Lawson went on to become a 4-time World 500cc Champion and 31 Grand Prix wins, a 2-time Daytona 200 winner and in 1990, Lawson won the Suzuka 8-Hour endurance race on a Yamaha paired with Japanese rider Tadahiko Taira. After retiring from motorcycle racing he pursued a career in formula cars, competing in the Indy Lights series and eventually to CART. Lawson was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. He was inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2002. In 2005 the International Motorcycling Federation named him an official "Grand Prix Legend."
