This unique wall hanging is a black & white photographic study of the iconic Norton Manx from a beautiful 1957 example of the bike that was voted among the "Top Five Greatest Motorcycles of the Century" by just about every motorcycle magazine in the world. This tank view is what you might see as you are about to grab the handle bar and climb on the bike for a spirited ride.
The Norton 500cc single-cylinder motor combined with the famous Featherbed frame made it fast, nimble and agile. The Manx's best feature was its cornering ability for which Norton was known. The last Manx was built in 1962, however, as late as 1969, in the hands of privateer racers, the Manx was still taking Grand Prix victories. The little single-cylinder bike was not only surviving, but beating multi-cylinder bikes from MV Agusta, Moto Guzzi, and the Japanese brands with newer technology.
The Norton Manx was developed to win the Isle of Man TT. In 1950 the innovative Featherbed frame was developed, giving the Manx a significant competitive advantage with its low center of gravity and short wheelbase -- perfectly suited for the long and challenging island course.
