A rat rod, by today's standards, is a style of hot rod that imitates the street rods of the 40s, 50s, and early 60s. The original hot rod formula was "function over style" -- less weight, sans fenders, chopped top, etc. with more horsepower makes the faster car -- hence a "hot rod."
By the late 1950s and early 1960s the hot rod builders began to stylize the stripped-down rod look. But the real hot rodders were more interested in how their rods performed than how "clean" they looked.
